25th Anniversary of Disneyland®

Disneyland® celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1980. This Open Edition pin Celebrates this silver anniversary The pin features Mickey Mouse and Pluto along with a silver 25, all of which are pin-on-pin. Disney Design Group Artist Tyler Dumas designed this pin.

Did you know?
Marking 25 years of operation, the history and heritage of Disneyland® became the focus of new entertainment such as the "Disneyland Is Your Land" stage show and in the "25th Birthday Parade," which took a nostalgic look at each of the park's seven themed lands. However, the biggest anniversary event was a 25-hour party which lasted from July 16 at midnight to 1 a.m. on July 18. All attractions and stores remained open around the clock while top performers played all over the park. On July 17, the actual anniversary date, a special ceremony was held in Town Square which ended with the release of 25,000 silver and white balloons.

1981
Disneyland® Welcomes 200,000,000 Guest

On January 8, 1981, Disneyland® welcomed the 200,000,000 Guest - Gert Schelvis from Santa Barabara, California. On this Open Edition pin, Mickey Mouse celebrates that special occasion. The streamers are pins-on-pin. Disney Design Group Artist Lin Shih created the artwork for this pin.

Disneyland® has welcomed millions of Guests throughout the years. The 1 millionth Guest, Elsa Marquez, was welcomed to Disneyland® on September 8, 1955. On June 17, 1971, Valerie Suldo became the 100 millionth Guest to enter Disneyland® Park. Coincidentally, on January 8, 2004 at 10:16 a.m., Disneyland® Resort welcomed it's 500 millionth Guest - the Trow Family from Wentworth Falls, N.S.W., Australia. The family received lifetime passes and was presented with a giant key proclaiming this magical milestone.

1982
A-E Tickets Retired

Disneyland® rang in a new era in June 1982, when it Retired A-E ticket books in favor of a single admission ticket allowing unlimited use of all attractions, except arcades. Mickey Mouse's hand moves up and down on this Open Edition pin. Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group designed this pin.

Did you know?
Disneyland® began offering ticket books to Guests on October 11, 1955. The first books cost $2.50 for an adult for a day at the park, and consisted of A, B, and C tickets for different attractions. A "D" ticket was added in 1956 and an "E" ticket in 1959.

1983
New Fantasyland® Opens

Following 20 months of construction, the New Fantasyland® Opened on May 25, 1983. This Open Edition pin features Tinker Bell, mounted on a spring, flying over the newly redesigned land. The "New Fantasyland" sign is a pin-on-pin. Disney Design Group Artist Chris Chapman created the artwork for this pin.

Did you know?
The original plans for Disneyland® called for a European village setting. But a lack of funds and shortage of time in 1955 prevented Walt's vision for the land from becoming an immediate reality. Mrs. Lillian Disney was in attendance for the May reopening ceremony and helped dedicate a plaque bearing the words spoken by Walt Disney during the original 1955 opening of Fantasyland®. During the ceremony, the castle drawbridge was raised and lowered for the first time since July 17, 1955. As part of the festivities, the children of the original children who had crossed the drawbridge in 1955 were invited to the park to initiate the new rides.

1984
Country Bear Christmas Special Debuts

In November 1984, the Country Bear Christmas Special debuted in Critter Country. One of the bears is a pin-on-pin with movement, while the dangle reads, "1984 Country Bear Christmas Special." Disney Design Group Artist Tyler Dumas designed this pin.

This attraction had originally been designed as a show for Mineral King ski resort, which Disney had planned on building in the 1960s. Videopolis Opens

On June 22, 1985, Videopolis opened next to Fantasyland®. This Open Edition pin features 1980s Mickey Mouse standing next to the Videopolis sign. Mickey is a pin-on-pin while the dangle reads, "Disneyland Resort." Disney Design Group Artist Chris Chapman created the artwork for this pin.

Totally Minnie Parade Debuts

During the summer of 1986, the Totally Minnie Parade debuted at Disneyland®. This parade featured over 100 performers and a rocking theme song. Walt Disney Records also released a "Totally Minnie" album in 1986. Later, there was a television special called "Disney's Totally Minnie" that was aired on February 21, 1988.

Star Tours Opens

Created in cooperation with George Lucas, Star Tours Opened on January 9, 1987 in Tomorrowland® This Open Edition pin features the "Star Tours" logo and StarSpeeder 3000 as a pin-on-pin. Did you know?
With the opening of this attraction, it marked the first time an aerospace simulator was used in a theme park. Many of the original props and miniatures from the Star Wars triology were used when making this attraction. The voice of the trainee pilot, REX, is provided by Paul Reubens.

The Walt Disney Company purchases Disneyland® Hotel

Goofy is seen checking into the Disneyland® Hotel in 1988. This Open Edition pin remembers when the Walt Disney Company purchased the hotel from the Wrather Corporation. When Walt Disney built Disneyland® in 1955, he did not have enough money to build a hotel too. He persuaded his friend Jack Wrather to build the hotel on Disney land across from the park. When the hotel was purchased by the Walt Disney Company in 1988, the Company also gained the lease to operate the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

Splash Mountain Opens

At opening, this attraction featured the longest flume chute in the world - 52-feet at a 45 degree angle. Disney designer Tony Baxter came up with the idea for the attraction while stuck in his car during rush-hour traffic in 1983.

Party Gras Parade Debuts

The Party Gras Parade made its debut on January 11, 1990. This Open Edition pin features three floats from this larger than life spectacular - Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Roger Rabbit. The parade ended its run on November 18, 1990. Performers would toss special Party Gras coins ans strings of beads out to Guests. The parade would also stop at intervals where a special performance would be given. This parade was part of the 35 Years of Magic celebration for Disneyland's® 35th Anniversary.

Disney Afternoon Avenue Opens

1991 saw the Opening of the Disney Afternoon Avenue in Fantasyland®. This Open Edition spinner pin features a street sign pole that spins around characters from Disney Afternoon television shows. Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group created the artwork for this pin.

Did you know?
This special promotion ran from March 15 to November 10, 1991. The area in fron of "it's a small world" was decorated with building fronts modeled after those on the Disney animated television shows. The Fantasyland Autopia and Motor Boat Cruise were also themed to the Disney Afternoon.

Fantasmic! Opens

Beginning May 13, 1992, the night-time spectacular Fantasmic! Opened along the Rivers of America in Frontierland®. This Open Edition pin features Sorcerer Mickey battling Maleficent the Dragon. To prepare Fantasmic!, the Rivers of America had to be drained to enable the installation of various mechanisms, and the mill and part of the south end of Tom Sawyer Island were removed so the rustic stage setting for the show could be built.

Did you know?
The attraction opened on May 5, 2004. The Tower stands at 183 feet in California while it's sister attraction in Florida stands at 199 feet. Disney Imagineers were able to build some of the Tower's ride system underground in California. The same could not be done in Florida due to the high water table. Each attraction is unique, featuring different (yet somtimes familiar) special effects.
