Magical Milestones ~ 1955 to 1979

Pay tribute to 50 Magical Milestones as part of Disneyland® Resort's Happiest Homecoming On Earth celebration. This pin collection celebrates a moment, experience or attraction from each of the 50 years of the Disneyland® Resort. Each of these Open Edition pins will contain a special small golden Castle attached to it.

1955
Opening Day

This Open Edition pin remembers 1955 and the Opening Day of Disneyland® Park. The pin features Sleeping Beauty Castle with a picture of Walt Disney in the castle entrance. The dangle is a crest paying tribute to that magical day on July 17, 1955. This pin was designed by Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group.

Walt Disney originally first thought of building his park on a strip of land across Riverside Drive at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California?

Tom Sawyer Island Opens

This Open Edition pin remembers 1956 when Tom Sawyer Island opens in Frontierland® at Disneyland® Park. The "Tom Sawyer Island" is "Free-D" (Fastened Rubber Element on a pin for Extra Dimension), and the raft moves from side to side. This pin was designed by Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group.

Did you know?
Tom Sawyer Island opened on June 16, 1956. On Disneyland's® Opening Day, the island existed in the middle of the Rivers of America in Frontierland®. The attractions on the island were not built until many months later.

House of the Future Opens

This Open Edition pin remembers 1957 and the House of the Future Opening in Tomorrowland®. The pin-on-pin features the House of the Future made from PVC; the windows were done in a translucent blue fill. This pin was designed by Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group.

Did you know?
The House of the Future opened on June 12, 1957 and closed in December 1967. Built of plastics, the four-winged cantilevered house featured the latest in furniture and appliances. The house was so well built that when the wrecker's ball struck the house to demolish it, the ball merely bounced off. Demolition experts had to use saws and crowbars to take it apart piece by piece.

Alice In Wonderland Opens

This Open Edition pin remembers 1958 and the Opening of the Alice in Wonderland Attraction in Fantasyland®. Alice, a pin-on-pin, is seated in a ride vehicle. The dangle features the small golden Castle icon and says "Disneyland." This pin was designed by Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group.

Did you know?
Kathryn Beaumont, who had provided the voice for Alice in the 1951 motion picture, was brought back at that time to record the narration tracks for the attraction.

Disneyland® Monorail Opens

This Open Edition pin remembers 1959 and the Opening of the Disneyland® Monorail in Tomorrowland®. This dangle pin features the original poster advertising the monorail. The red monorail featured on the dangle is a pin-on-pin. This pin was designed by Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group.

Did you know?
This attraction opened on June 14, 1959 and it was the first daily operating monorail in the United States. The Monorail beam was extended, with the new Mark II trains, to the Disneyland® Hotel in 1961. At that time, it was the first monorail in the United States to actually cross a public street.

The Parade of Toys Debuts

Remember 1960 and the Debut of the Parade of Toys with this Open Edition pin. This dangle pin features parade floats from this unique parade. Flying Saucers Invade Tomorrowland®

Celebrating 1961, this Open Edition pin remembers when the Flying Saucers attraction opened in Tomorrowland®. The Flying Saucer ride vehicles are mounted on springs, and the "Disneyland Resort" name is a dangle. Disney Design Group Artist Chris Chapman created the artwork for this pin

Did you know?
This attraction operated from August 6, 1961 to September 5, 1966. Individually controlled vehicles floated on a cushion of air. Beneath the floor of the attraction were 100-horse power motors. Together, the motors blew more than 300,000 cubic feet of air per minute up to move the ride vehicles. However, the technology at the time wasn't perfected. So, the attraction was constantly breaking down.

John Mills and Haley Mills, from Walt Disney's live action film Swiss Family Robinson, were on hand for the dedication with Walt Disney. The tree has been called a Disneyodendron semperflorens grandis (or "large ever-blooming Disney tree).

Did you know?
This classic attraction opened on June 23, 1963. It was the first attraction to feature Audio-Animatronics® figures. Originally, the Enchanted Tiki Room was to have been a restaurant. The idea changed when it was realized that people would stop eating to watch the show. The restaurant would have never been able to keep up with the reservations!

First Disneyland® Resort Ambassador Selected

In 1964, Julie Reihm was selected by Walt Disney as the first Disneyland® Ambassador. This Open Edition pin celebrates the selection of the first "Disneyland ambassador to the world.". The Disney Ambassador Program continues today. Ambassadors are found at each of the Disney Theme Parks around the world, including Hong Kong Disneyland opening in September 2005. Following a detailed selection process, Ambassadors are selected for a year-long assignment to represent the friendly and diverse Cast Members of a particular Disney destination. For the Disneyland® Resort's Happiest Homecoming On Earth, Julie Andrews was named an honorary "Disney ambassador to the world."

Disneyland® Tencennial Celebration

1965 marked the tenth anniversary of Disneyland®. This Open Edition pin remembers Disneyland's Tencennial Celebration. "The Disneyland Tenth Anniversary Show" aired on January 3, 1965. During the broadcast, Walt Disney gave Julie Reihm, the first Disneyland® Ambassador, a sneak preview of several new attractions coming to Disneyland® Park including Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. The Tencennial Celebration at Disneyland® Park included a new parade.

Walt Disney always enjoyed New Orleans. He felt the unique New Orleans architecture would add an ideal touch along the banks of the Rivers of America. Walt Disney even planned to have an apartment located in New Orleans square. The unfinished apartment still exists today.

Carousel of Progress Opens

The Carousel of Progress opened in Tomorrowland® on July 2, 1967. This Open Edition spinner pin remembers the opening of that classic attraction that taught Guests a beautiful tomorrow is "only a dream away." The spinner on this pin rotates to show the various years featured in the attraction. Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group created the artwork for this pin.

Did you know?
This attraction originally debuted at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. During the Fair's opening, Mr. Lincoln (from Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln) experienced several technical difficulties. So, the first human Audio-Animatronic® figure that Guests' saw was "Father" from this attraction. Mr. Lincoln debuted about a week later. The attraction at Disneyland® Park was closed on September 9, 1973 and moved to Walt Disney World® Resort. It reopened in Florida on January 15, 1975.

Winnie the Pooh For President

This Open Edition pin celebrates 1968 and the first Winnie the Pooh for President campaign. It was part of the On Stage U.S.A. show in 1968. The next "Pooh for President" campaign was held in 1972. Winnie the Pooh is a pin-on-pin while the bees are attached by springs. Tyler Dumas from Disney Design Group created the artwork for this pin.

1968 was a big year for Winnie the Pooh and friends. On December 20, 1968, the cartoon featurette, Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day was released in theaters. It proved to be even more successful than its predecessor, Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree. It won an Academy Award® as Best Cartoon Short Subject.

Haunted Mansion Opens

"Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion" was first heard on August 9, 1969. This Open Edition hinged and dangle pin remembers the Opening of the Haunted Mansion in New Orleans Square. This pin featured hinged doors that open to reveal the three hitchhiking ghosts. The dangle is a bat with "Disneyland" in the center. Disney Design Group Artist Chris Chapman created the artwork for this pin.

Did you know?
A haunted house-style attraction dated back to the initial designs for Disneyland® Park, with a ramshackle mansion appearing on a concept sketch for Main Street, U.S.A.®. Though that version never came to be, a stately Southern manor eventually took shape along the southwestern bank of the Rivers of America in 1963. The Haunted Mansion had originally been conceived as a walk-through exhibit, with two identical show experiences operating side-by-side to handle the anticipated crowds. This method was eventually discarded as impractical and the "Doom Buggy" Omnimover system was adopted.

The parade's synthesizer music is based on a piece called "Baroque Hoedown," with themes from Disney songs worked in. The parade did not run in 1975 and 1976 beacuse of America on Parade for the Bicentennial, but it returned in 1977 with a whole new edition. A 108-foot-long "Honor America" finale unit was added in 1979.

Did you know?
This attraction took the place of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. The movie was narrated by Walt Disney and told his life story. Many Guests missed Lincoln, however, so the movie closed on February 12, 1975, enabling Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln to return to the theater.

Celebrating the U.S.A. Bicentennial

As the "Spirit of '76," Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy led the celebration in 1976 for the Bicentennial of the United States of America. America On Parade, a special American Bicentennial parade, actually started performances on June 14, 1975. The parade ran until September 6, 1976. Disney designers, led by entertainment head Bob Jani, came up with special floats and a series of costumes featuring oversized heads that told the story of America's history, culture and achievements. After the parade ended, these "big head" figures eventually made their way to Epcot® at Walt Disney World® Resort. They were the only characters found at Epcot® for the first couple of years after opening in 1982.

This attraction was originally planned as an "anchor" attraction for New Tomorrowland in 1967. With the construction and opening of Walt Disney World®, plans were put on hold. Finally in June 1975, construction began on the 200-foot wide building. By the time the mountain was built, it had used approximately 1,000 tons of steel! In 2005, a new Space Mountain will debut as part of the Happiest Homecoming On Earth, complete with new special effects and music.

The Abominable Snowman was not the only thing added to the Matterhorn in 1978. Imagineers also added an ice cavern, glowing ice crystals and a new ride system that featured tandem bobsleds. Until it was removed in 1994, the Skyway's cable passed directly through the mountain offering more leisurely views of the Abominable Snowman.

For this original attraction at Disneyland, Disney designer Tony Baxter was intrigued by the scenery at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, so he deisgned the first Big Thunder Moutain to resemble it. The other Big Thunder Mountain Railroads resemble scenery at Monument Valley. Dallas McKinnon provided the voice of character asking Guests to "hold on to them hats and glasses." He also provided the voice of Ben Franklin in the American Adventure Pavilion at Epcot®.
